Rural King Construction Begins

Construction has officially begun on the long-anticipated Rural King store in Lancaster.

Rural King, a family-owned business headquartered in Mattoon, Illinois, finalized the purchase of the property at 1730 River Valley Circle North in mid-August 2025. The acquisition includes the former Elder-Beerman anchor store as well as a portion of the River Valley Mall parking lot.

The company worked through several zoning approvals to move the project forward. Among these was approval for an outdoor merchandise display area, a signature feature of Rural King stores. These areas typically showcase outdoor power equipment, agricultural vehicles, and seasonal items. With approvals in place, the company purchased the property with plans to renovate and potentially expand the footprint, though details regarding expansion have not yet been disclosed. As part of the site improvements, Rural King is also expected to repave and upgrade portions of the parking lot included in the purchase.

There has also been speculation about Rural King purchasing the entire retail center known as River Valley Mall. While there is no evidence of such plans at this time, the company has acquired retail centers containing its stores in the past.

Rural King is recognized for offering a wide range of products, including agricultural supplies, livestock feed, pet care, tools, hardware, clothing, hunting and fishing gear, firearms, and seasonal home goods. The company is also known for its customer-friendly touches, such as complimentary coffee and popcorn in stores.

An official opening date has not yet been announced, though it is expected the Lancaster location will open sometime in 2026. For updates and job postings, visit www.ruralking.com.
