Nestled within Fairfield County, in Carroll, Ohio, lies a hidden gem that has captivated locals and visitors alike – the five-and-a-half-story gristmill known as Rock Mill, built in 1824. Among approximately 12 dozen gristmills powered by the Hocking River, Rock Mill stood out. It operated through the early 1900s, grinding flour and corn. However, for about a century, Rock Mill lay abandoned and in ruins.

In 2003, the owners of the land and mill, Robert and Rita Stebelton, generously donated Rock Mill to the Fairfield County Park District. Following a substantial archaeological excavation, the original millstones were discovered.

After 2003, extensive refurbishment of the mill commenced. All outer walls, four above-grade floors, and two sub-floors underwent renovation as the parks district initiated the mill's revival. The 1901 Rock Mill Covered Bridge received restoration in 2008. A fully operational replica of the 26-foot diameter all-wood waterwheel was constructed and positioned in 2013, making it the largest in the state of Ohio.

Continuing into October 2016, the milling floor was installed, and gearing connections began. Progress persisted through 2017. In the summer of that year, Rock Mill milled grain for the first time in over a century!

The interior of the mill has intermittently been accessible to the public during various stages of restoration and is now open for 'Rock Mill Days' on select dates. From May to October, visitors can explore the inside of Rock Mill on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting. Additionally, Rock Mill welcomes visitors on Memorial Day and Labor Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Furthermore, on the last Sunday of each month from May to October, milling demonstrations will take place, showcasing to guests the traditional method of corn grinding used over 200 years ago!
